In the news is the closure of the alternative bookshop Agitprop; the new chairman of the BBC is to be the homophobic Sir Michael Swann; and the UK’s entry into the Common Market makes us all Euro Gays, so what does 1973 have in store for us? Reviews include The Honoured Society by Norman Lewis and Play It Again Sam.

  • Please see the Project’s policy on censorship. This edition has been censored by us in three places: the cover image and two photographs on page 7. Whilst we don’t, per se, believe the pictures to be pornographic, the models were clearly underage and deserve to have their identities hidden.

Lord Denning at the Appeal Court cleared ATV’s Warhol documentary – banned by a judge who hadn’t seen it – to go out on ITV, but laid the boot in anyway: it was dreary and dull and appealed only to perverts and homosexuals.   • The bank robbery that became the film Dog Day Afternoon continues to fascinate the paper. Note the main headline: we wouldn’t describe the woman in the picture as a “man” nowadays. ATV’s Warhol documentary will go out on the ITV network on 27 March. The California State Supreme Court has banned police from entrapping men who have sex with men in public lavatories in the state, saying it breaches the Fourth Amendment. The Times newspaper suggested 230. Monty Python’s Flying Circus is going on tour through the UK and Canada. A problem page debuts: Alan is drinking to avoid shyness and worries about going bald at 24; Ken is 46, lonely in Newcastle and banned from the local CHE group for announcing the name too loudly.   • This issue was late getting to subscribers and the newsstands due to industrial action by the T&G and ASLEF amongst others on 1 May, protesting the government’s incomes policy.
