International Times (IT) was before the House of Lords, having been prosecuted for publishing LGBT+ contact ads. They lost. Reviews include Cabaret and Dietrich in London. The (illegal) personal ads are all from members of staff

  • The mainstream newspapers have been discussing whether the Sexual Offences Act 1967, which partially decriminalised male homosexuality for over-21s in England and Wales, has gone far enough or too far. In Scotland, where homosexuality remains illegal, the question is whether it should be legalised or clamped down upon. Gay News also pays a visit to The Samaritans, to see if they are willing or able to offer help to LGBT+ people with mental health issues. The answer is not encouraging. The main feature is an interview by Denis Lemon with artist David Hockney; beginning in this edition is coverage of a group of radical feminists gatecrashing a party hosted by Spare Rib magazine, the effects of which would rumble on for the next couple of issues. Reviews include Frogs and The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

The editorial is a plea for money – a theme that will reoccur repeatedly in across the first few years of the newspaper. In the letters, someone has written to Paul Temperton of CHE to complain about the new newspaper, believing it to be a CHE publication; he passes the complaint on. Reviews include Girl Stroke Boy,  Jesus Christ Superstar and David Bowie and others at a Friends of the Earth concert.

Meanwhile, Lilly Law has started to persecute the Keele Gay Liberation Society after many weeks of spying on them as they meet in a local pub; the usual modus operandi – accusing them of having sex with men aged under 21 – was used to drag them into court. Weymouth Council has withdrawn its offer to host CHE’s first annual conference due to the very idea being ‘disgusting’. Weymouth’s loss would be Morecambe’s gain.   • The paper leads with what reads to modern eyes as something of a BDSM wank fantasy. The police have been keeping files on schoolteachers they suspect of being LGBT+. Kensington police have been policing the borough’s morals, demanding that Oz and several other publications are kept out of sight; they were, however, unconcerned about Gay News for once, and also paid no attention to IT, which had a cock on its cover. The BBC banned the video that accompanies David Bowie’s John I’m Only Dancing, substituting it on Top of the Pops with footage of people riding motorcycles.
