  • The Sexual Reform Movement organised its first all-Ireland conference on legalising gay relations. Speakers included Don Gill, Al Stewart, Terry Bruton, Fred Broughton and Pat Knight. Male homosexuality was decriminalised in the North in 1982, and in the Republic in 1993. Meanwhile, in Western Australia, the legislature moved towards decriminalisation (achieved in 1990), whilst at Westminster, Michael Clark Hutchinson, Scottish Tory MP for Edinburgh South, pledged to derail any attempt at decriminalisation (achieved 1981).

    In other news, Liverpool welcomed CHE’s quarterly National Council meeting – to the point of the Holiday Inn putting a big sign out front and Merseytravel renting out the mv Royal Iris for a big disco.

    Reviews include Poland (seemingly more welcoming to LGBT+ people under Communism than it is now as a democracy), Jobriath’s self-titled album, Mrs Shufflewick’s A Drop of the Hard Stuff, and Flowers – A Pantomime for Jean Genet at the Bush Theatre.

  • ‘Gay News receives many letters from would-be subscribers anxiously enquiring whether the paper is sent under plain cover in a sealed envelope. There is a great deal of paranoia still about having copies sent.
  • `It therefore amused us to receive a letter from a friend in Northern Ireland which began:
  • ‘”Dear GN – First of all, thanks for the two copies of GN that you have sent so far. Actually I am not used to receiving large, bulky, unmarked packages and they tend to cause some paranoia, so I would welcome it if you just wrote Gay News on the back to let me know that it is safe to open…'” – page 3

  • A puzzle, as gay guests of Her Majesty at HM Prisons Maidstone and Camp Hill have tried to subscribe to the newspaper and have been stopped from doing so. The governors deny responsibility, the prison service deny it too. It looks like “someone senior” at the Home Office has intervened.
     

    Meanwhile, Jennifer Justice continues to prowl the gay world. Good news: gay-friendly nightclub Chaguaramas keeps its licence despite a campaign to close it; the novel Street Boy Swinging London by Richard Green is not obscene; 18 Chicago cops get sent down for extorting protection money from gay bars; and Michael Moores, who was accused of ‘obstructing a footpath’ by walking past the Coleherne, was freed by magistrates who thought the police were being ludicrous. Bad news: a crackdown on homosexuality in Austria sees local police arresting everybody in or near a cruising area, then raiding a pub and arresting anybody who was “obviously” gay; and Mitcham police in London have decided to ‘clean up’ the cottages on their patch, arresting virtually any man unfortunate enough to need a pee.

    Reviews include the films Enter the Dragon and The Satanic Rites of Dracula, Danny La Rue at the Prince of Wales Theatre and the novel The Ladies of Llangollen by Elizabeth Mavor.

  • Sisters Claim Back Lesbos: Hundreds of European lesbians plan to libe­rate the island of Lesbos from the hetero­sexual bosses of Greek government. The campaign aims to establish a “Lesbian Republic”. Lesbos was the island home of Sappho, famous gay poetess of ancient Greece. – page 5

  • Ohmygosh, Look At Me! – DELMAR, California: Gay men are more likely to be dissatisfied with their bodies and cock-size than heterosexual men,
    according to a reader-survey by the magazine Psychology Today.
    The survey found that 55 per cent of all men and 45 per cent of all women were quite satisfied if not extremely satisfied, with their bodies in general face, arms, voice, abdomen, weight and so forth. But, whereas 33 per cent of straight men gave their bodies an above-average score, only
    25 per cent of gay men did so. Further, 45 per cent of gay men had low, below-average images of their penises on a two-item measure: satisfaction with sex organ size and appearance of genitals. Only 25 per cent of het males gave themselves below-average ratings. – page 20

  • Issue 41’s feature on poetry proved popular, so the paper has decided to regularly publish more contemporary poems on gay themes. This will not end well.

  • Teaching Coppers the Law – MANCHESTER: Two cool girls drove a policeman into a quandary here the other day, when they decided to have a kiss and a natter. In public? The girls left a fortnightly gay women’s meeting in central Manchester and walked to their car. Inside the car, their kiss and cuddle was interrupted by tapping on the window. A policeman told them they were going to be arrested. The girls patiently explained to him that the 1967 Sexual Offences Act applied only to men. And while the girls smooched, the policeman conferred with the station. He was told that he had made a mistake. But he returned and tried again to arrest the girls. They told him he was being silly and drove off. – page 20

  • Bath police raided a wholesaler and stole their copies of Gay News, saying that the edition of the paper, with an image of a wedding from a Yorkshire Television documentary on the cover, was clearly obscene without even having to read it. The local magistrates have sided with the paper. GLF is to contest three seats on Lambeth council. When CHE meets in Malvern at the end of May, they will be showing rare archive material of David Bowie in 1969. And the Naval Welfare Committee is concerned that their fathers being away at sea means that children will turn gay. Uh huh.

  • This is the last edition of the paper with this masthead, introduced in July 1973 with issue 27.

  • The front page credits the photograph to Camera Press London. Except there’s no photograph on the front page. The next issue explains that the page was hurriedly remade just as the edition went to print and the credit still being there was missed.

  • 15p of Rubbish – “Not again! Not content with the Chris­topher Street interview (GN35), the Royal Wedding Souvenir (GN36), Bob Sturgess’ and Terence’s letters (GNs 41&42), and not forgetting John Olday’s sexist humourless cartoons, you have to give us 2 pages in GN43 on ‘Homophobics’. If any of these had been funny it might have been worth filling up the odd half page with them, but to devote up to 10% of the paper to any of them is a waste of valuable space. I don’t spend 15p on a ‘newspaper’ in order to read such rubbish.” – Michael Foreman, page 2

  • Marje Proops (good) and Jean Rook (bad) have takes on the Young Liberals’ plans for comprehensive sex education. The chief constable of Hampshire says there’s a problem with sex crimes in his area, mainly caused by his broad definition of being gay being a sex crime.

  • Gay News has been forced on to poorer quality paper in a new taller size, which they have apologised for by adding a splash of extra colour.

  • The Queen’s Navy – LONDON: We quote, without comment, from an advertisement for the Royal Navy which appeared in The Sunday Times:
  • “And then there’s the morning watch, when perhaps there’s just you and a junior seaman on the bridge and the sleeping ship is entirely in your hands. Apart from the dim glow from the repeater compass and the situation board, the only light is the hint of the Caribbean dawn – and it’s then that you remember why it is that you wanted to be a Naval Officer.
